Why I Love Twice

In these tough and unsettling times, it is easy to just slip into the cracks and feel as if there is no hope. But I want to believe, I have to believe. I have to believe that things will get better. But as a person who has totally fallen in love with the Korean girl group Twice, it’s hard to feel anything other than glee.

Before I started writing this article, I watched about half an hour of Twice videos – just getting totally distracted from what I was wanting to do which was write about the musical act itself. I am totally enamored by: Nayeon, Jeongyeon, Momo, Sana, Jihyo, Mina, Dahyun, Chaeyoung, and Tzuyu – I am in love with these women. Before I even started getting into their music I thought “There’s no way I’m going to be one of those dorks who keeps a picture of their celeb crush on their phone” but here I am, doing just that. You know how awkward it is to explain to your friends that the girl on your phone background is not your girlfriend.

Twice’s act is that they are the essence of joy and charm. In the world of K-pop, besides Momo at dancing and maybe Chaeyoung at rapping, there aren’t really any members of Twice that are particular standouts at singing, dancing, or rapping. They are examples of the whole being greater than the sum of its parts. However, they are without a doubt, the most charming act in entertainment and I dare you to watch the videos for Heart Shaker, Yes or Yes, or Likey without feeling some type of way.

And it’s a trap, I get it. You only watch one Sana fancam on YouTube and suddenly you watch all the other performances. You fall in love with the girls, and if you’re a single loser like me, they totally distort your perception of women. I never expected to like them so much, but when I’m sad, when I have a bad day – I watch their videos because they make me happy!

And I know that I wouldn’t have been so hooked if they weren’t attractive, but beauty fades and its abundant. There are so many beautiful famous people in the world, but they have to do something to stand out from the crowd. Twice stands out with pure happiness and the power of sisterhood. They are unapologetic about being girly, about being in love, about having butterflies in your stomach. And I think that a lot of people need to be less ashamed of the person who they are on the inside (unless you’re a bigot).

Will things get better? I don’t know, but as long as Twice tells me to Cheer Up, I will – I will keep my chin up and stay positive!
